MeMoSA® (Mobile Mouth Screening Anywhere) is an AI-enabled mobile health application designed to help detect early signs of oral cancer.
Using a smartphone and built-in guidance, healthcare professionals or trained community volunteers can take close-up photos of areas inside the mouth that appear unusual. These images are then securely sent to dentists or specialists for remote review.
This allows screening to take place in communities, workplaces, or outreach programmes, helping people access early oral health assessments even in areas where dental specialists may not be easily available.
MeMoSA® is an AI-enabled digital health platform for oral lesion screening and teleconsultation, developed by Cancer Research Malaysia.
The platform enables community-based screening through guided smartphone image capture of the oral cavity. Images are securely transmitted to a remote clinical review network where dentists or specialists assess the lesions and provide triage recommendations.
An integrated AI quality-control module evaluates image adequacy and prompts users to retake images when necessary. By combining mobile screening, remote specialist review, and digital referral pathways, MeMoSA® enables scalable early detection.

MeMoSA® (Mobile Mouth Screening Anywhere) is an AI-assisted, clinician-reviewed digital platform designed to support screening for oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) by enabling guided image capture and remote clinical review. It is intended to improve access to screening, particularly in settings where dental services are limited.
No. MeMoSA® is a screening support tool, not a diagnostic test. It helps identify oral lesions that may require further clinical attention, but it does not provide medical diagnoses or replace in-person examinations with a qualified dental or medical professional.
No. The AI component in MeMoSA® assists with image quality assessment and structured data capture. All submitted images are reviewed by qualified dentists or oral specialists, who determine whether referral or follow-up is recommended.
All images are reviewed by trained dental professionals within the MeMoSA® clinical reviewer network, which includes general dentists and oral medicine / oral pathology specialists.
If the screening identifies a suspicious lesion, the individual will be advised to seek follow-up care with a dentist or specialist. MeMoSA® supports referral pathways—patients may be referred directly back to their organisation’s dental clinic or to MeMoSA®’s clinical network of dental partners and specialists.
MeMoSA® has demonstrated high concordance with clinical oral examination in validation studies. A validation study demonstrated 94.9% concordance between screening using the MeMoSA® App and clinical oral examination (COE), confirming the reliability of remote review with MeMoSA® as a screening support tool.
MeMoSA®’s data handling practices are aligned with Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). All users are required to review and provide consent before proceeding. The platform has undergone robust black-box and white-box penetration testing conducted by globally recognised cybersecurity service providers to safeguard patient information.
